Mount a CIFS Share on Centos OS

Many times, we would need to add a windows Samba share to a Linux machine to access or move files across devices.

In this post, let us see, how to add a Samba Share which exists on a windows machine on to a Linux server/machine

Step 1: On Your Linux Machine, install the following packages

      1. samba
      2. samba-client
      3. cifs-utils

      # sudo yum install samba samba-client cifs-utils

Step 2: Create a Directory on the Linux machine, where you want to mount the Samba Drive

      # mkdir /cifsshare

In the above step, we are creating a directory named as “cifsshare” under the / directory

Step 3: Mount the share on to the local directory using the below command

      # mount.cifs //SERVER_ADDRESS/SHARE_NAME MOUNT_POINT -o user=USERNAME

      Example:

      # mount.cifs //192.168.1.11/disk001 /cifsshare -o user=user001

You will now be asked for the password, which should have been provided by the Windows/Samba Administrator

Step 4: Enter the password of the user given by the samba/windows admin

Step 5: Change directory to the /cifsshare

      # cd /cifsshare

You should be able to view all the files under the disk001 directory on the windows machine.

You may be able to access(view or edit) the files under the directory, based on the permissions
      given by the Windows/Samba administrator
